If you manage variable products in WooCommerce, you already know how tedious it can be to edit variation descriptions manually.
By default, WooCommerce forces you to:
- Open a variable product
- Edit each variation one by one
- Save changes
- Repeat the process for the next product
Now imagine doing that for dozens—or even hundreds—of products.
It’s slow, repetitive, and far from efficient.
In this guide, you’ll learn how to bulk edit WooCommerce variation descriptions quickly using a spreadsheet interface, so you can update hundreds of variations in minutes instead of hours.
We’ll use the WP Sheet Editor – WooCommerce Products plugin, which allows you to manage all your products and variations from a single screen.

Why Bulk Edit Variation Descriptions?
Before jumping into the steps, here are some common scenarios where this is extremely useful:
- You want to add size-specific details (e.g., sizing notes for clothing variations)
- You need to include different instructions per variation
- You imported products and need to clean or standardize descriptions
- You want to improve SEO by adding more descriptive variation content
Instead of editing everything manually, you can handle all of this in bulk.
1. Open the WooCommerce Products Spreadsheet
After installing and activating the plugin, go to:
WP Sheet Editor > Edit products
This will open a spreadsheet containing all your WooCommerce products and their data.
This spreadsheet view is key because it lets you edit multiple products and variations without opening each one individually.
2. Display Product Variations in the Spreadsheet
By default, you might only see parent (variable) products.
To display all variations, click on the Display variations button.
Now, all variations will appear directly below their parent products.
This makes it much easier to review and edit variation data in one place.
3. (Optional) Show Only Variable Products and Variations
If your store has many simple products, filtering them out can help you focus only on variations.
To do this, open the Search tool.
Then:
- Enable the Search on variations option
- Click Run search
You’ll now see only variable products and their variations.
This step is optional, but very helpful when working with large catalogs.
4. Option 1: Edit Variation Descriptions Directly in the Spreadsheet
If you need to assign different descriptions to each variation, you can do it directly in the spreadsheet.
Simply locate the Variation description column and edit the cells as needed.
For example:
- Add size-specific notes (e.g., “Runs small, consider sizing up”)
- Include material differences (e.g., “100% cotton for this variation”)
- Add variation-specific instructions
Once you’re done, click Save to apply all changes at once.
5. Option 2: Bulk Edit Variation Descriptions at Once
If you want to apply the same description to multiple variations, the Bulk Edit tool is the fastest option.
Configure the tool with these settings:
- Select the rows that you want to update:
- Edit all rows from the current search (recommended)
- Or edit only manually selected rows
- What field do you want to edit: Variation description
- Select type of edit: Set value
- Replace existing value with this value: Enter your new description
- Important: Select Edit only variations
- Click Execute now
After running the bulk edit, all selected variations will be updated.
Done! Manage Variation Descriptions Efficiently
As you can see, editing WooCommerce variation descriptions doesn’t have to be a slow, manual process.
With WP Sheet Editor, you can:
- Edit all variation descriptions in one place
- Apply bulk updates in minutes
- Improve product clarity and SEO
- Save hours of repetitive work
This approach is ideal for stores with large catalogs or complex variable products.
