In this tutorial, we show you how to bulk rename WooCommerce products.
One of the challenges that store owners encounter is the requirement to rename many WooCommerce products, which may be a time-consuming task if done manually.
Bulk renaming WooCommerce products can help online sellers optimize product titles for search engines, improve user experience, and keep a consistent naming pattern.
Fortunately, there is a solution to this issue.
In this article, we’ll go through how to bulk change WooCommerce product names with WP Sheet Editor, a handy plugin that may help you save time and streamline store management.
Install the WP Sheet Editor plugin to bulk rename WooCommerce products
WP Sheet Editor provides a Products Spreadsheet where you can see all the product information, and you can edit freely.
You can skip this step if you already have the plugin installed and activated.
You can download the plugin here:
Download WooCommerce Products Spreadsheet Plugin - or - Check the features
Open the plugin by going to WP Sheet Editor > Edit Products.
Once you open the plugin, you’ll find all your products along with their detailed information.
Once the spreadsheet is ready, you can use any of the options to bulk change the product names that we show you below:
1. Rename WooCommerce products in the spreadsheet
Renaming products in bulk using a spreadsheet can save you a lot of time, especially if you have a large inventory.
It also allows you to double-check and guarantee the names’ accuracy before uploading them to your WooCommerce store.
You can modify your product names with WP Sheet Editor the same way you would in Excel or Google Sheets by going to the “Name” column and freely editing the titles.
Don’t forget to Save your changes once you’ve finished editing to bulk rename your WooCommerce products.
This spreadsheet editing is quite convenient if you need to make different changes to the names of your products.
But if you want to rename a large number of products, you can do it in bulk, as shown in the following sections.
2. Bulk append text to WooCommerce products
You may need to append, or in other words add text to the end of your products, to send a message to buyers who wish to purchase those specific products.
In the sections that follow, we will show you various text alternatives for adding to the end of the name of your products.
a) Add a special offer text to your product names
If a product is on sale or has a special offer, including “Sale,” “Clearance,” or “Discount” in the title can grab the attention of bargain hunters.
In cases like this, what you would like to do is first filter your products with sale prices, which can be done using the Search tool located in the plugin toolbar.
Once the tool is open, filter your products with sale prices:
- Use the Enable advanced filters checkbox
- Field: Sale price
- Operator: Not equal to (!=)
- Value: Leave it empty
- Run search
After filtering the products, you can append the special offer text chosen. In this case, we are adding “On Sale”.
To continue, open the Bulk Edit tool.
Into the bulk edit tool, you will need to enter the following values to modify your product titles:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (Even non-visible rows).
- What field do you want to update: Title
- Select type of edit: Append
- Enter the value to append to the existing value: – On sale! Include a blank space before this text to make the content make sense because our plugin will add whatever you put in this field right after the product name.
- Click on Execute now.
Now you will see the message at the end of the product titles.
b) Show “Discontinued” on your product titles
Knowing that a product has been discontinued may prompt customers to make a rushed purchase because they perceive the item to be available in limited quantities or for a limited period.
This sense of urgency may result in increased sales and faster inventory clearance.
Now, we know that not all products in your store are discontinued, so you may need to use the Search tool to filter the products you are going to rename.
Once the Search tool is open, you can use different parameters to filter your products, for example, filter all products whose stock is less than 20.
To do so, use the following fields:
- Use the Enable advanced filters checkbox
- Field: Stock
- Operator: <
- Value: 20
- Run search
After filtering the products to be renamed, open the Bulk Edit tool.
Once in the Bulk Edit tool, use the following parameters to append the “Discontinued” message to all the filtered products:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (Even non-visible rows).
- What field do you want to update: Title
- Select type of edit: Append
- Enter the value to append to the existing value: – Discontinued. Include a blank space before this text to make the content make sense because our plugin will add whatever you put in this field right after the product name.
- Click on Execute now.
After adding the text “Discontinued” to the discontinued products, they will appear in the spreadsheet like this:
c) Add product categories at the end of product names
You will find all the steps in our tutorial: WooCommerce – How to Append Category to Product Titles Globally
3. Bulk prepend text to WooCommerce products
Adding the brand name or some text indicating something particular about the product to the product name can help customers quickly identify if it is something they are interested in and improve search results.
Therefore, in the following sections, we show you different ways to accomplish this task.
a) Add brand at the beginning of product titles
Adding the vendor name can help customers quickly identify the maker of the product and improve search results.
NOTE: For this section, we have created the attribute called “Brand”, so it appears in the spreadsheet as “Product Brand“.
Before we go ahead and add the brand to the product name, let’s filter the products using the Search tool.
To search for all products whose price is over $50, use the following values:
- Use the Enable advanced filters checkbox
- Field: Regular price
- Operator: >
- Value: 50
- Run search
Now that the products have been filtered, let’s open the Bulk Edit tool.
Finally, enter these values to rename the product titles, adding the product brands:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (Even non-visible rows).
- What field do you want to update: Title
- Select type of edit: Prepend
- Enter the value to prepend to the existing value: $pa_brand$ – (In this case, it is important to add a blank space or a character after the attribute key to make a separation between the brand and the actual product name).
- Click on Execute now.
After you’ve completed the bulk edit, the brand will display before the titles of your products.
b) Enter a “Limited Stock” or “Exclusive” message in product names
For products with limited availability or exclusivity, adding “Limited Stock” or “Exclusive” to the title can create a sense of urgency and encourage customers to make a purchase.
There are some brands that make very exclusive products, so you will need to use the Search tool to filter your products by brand.
NOTE: For this example, we have created the attribute called “Brand”, so it appears in the spreadsheet as “Product Brand“.
Enter these values into the Search tool to filter all products that are of the same brand:
- Use the Enable advanced filters checkbox
- Field: Product brand
- Operator: =
- Value: Enter the brand you are looking for
- Run search
Now that you have filtered all products by brand, let’s rename them using the Bulk Edit tool.
To enter a “Limited Stock” or “Exclusive” message in your product names, enter these values into the Bulk Edit tool:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (Even non-visible rows).
- What field do you want to update: Title
- Select type of edit: Prepend
- Enter the value to prepend to the existing value: “Limited Stock” or “Exclusive” (To separate the message from the actual product name, it is necessary to add a space or character after the text).
- Click on Execute now.
After executing, you will see that the names of our products have been changed successfully.
c) Prepend “Personalized” to the name of your personalized products
Adding “Customizable” or “Personalized” to the title can attract customers looking for unique and tailored items.
For this, you may have a category called “Promotional products“, so you can start by filtering these products with the Search tool.
In the search tool, just enter the Category and Run the search.
After having the products filtered, open the Bulk Edit tool.
Enter these values into the Bulk Edit tool to prepend the word “Customizable” or “Personalized”:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (Even non-visible rows).
- What field do you want to update: Title
- Select type of edit: Prepend
- Enter the value to prepend to the existing value: Personalized – (In this case, a blank space or a character should be added after the text to distinguish it from the actual product name).
- Click on Execute now.
Now that the changes have been made, you will see the text “Personalized” at the beginning of the product titles.
4. Bulk replace or remove specific words from the product title
Something important, when you need to rename your Woocommerce products, is that sometimes, you will only need to eliminate or change a specific word or character, and we will show you how in the following sections.
a) Rename the product title by changing a specific word
Changing certain words in product titles can help improve clarity and maintain consistency throughout your product catalog. This can make it easier for customers to browse your store and find the products they’re looking for.
For example, you may want to look for all products that contain the word “Personalized” and change it to “Customizable”.
To start, let’s open the Search tool.
Once the tool is open, let’s introduce the keyword “Personalized” in the correct field and Run the search.
After filtering the products, let’s change their names with the Bulk Edit tool.
Now enter the following values to rename your product names by keyword:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (Even non-visible rows).
- What field do you want to update: Title
- Select type of edit: Replace
- Replace this: Enter the word you want to eliminate
- With this: Enter the new word
- Click on Execute now.
Once you execute the bulk edit, the current search will no longer show results since you have changed the word “Personalized”:
In this case, you can use the Search tool again to filter all products but now with the keyword “Customized”.
Now the filtered products will show the new word:
b) Update product name by removing its brand or category
Let’s say we have changed our mind and we no longer want the brands or categories of the products to show and now we need to update the name of our products.
To do this, you will need to open the Bulk Edit tool.
NOTE: For our store, we have created the attribute called “Brand”, so it appears in the spreadsheet as “Product Brand“.
Once the tool is open, enter these values:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (Even non-visible rows).
- What field do you want to update: Title
- Select type of edit: Replace
- Replace this: Here, we will enter the column key for brand $pa_brand$ or the column key for categories $product_cat$, depending on what attribute are we removing.
- With this: Leave this field empty
- Click on Execute now.
IMPORTANT:
-This edit will be performed only on product names containing the brand or category, otherwise, no change will be made.
-The change will be made if the brand or category in the product title is the same as the name in the “Product Brand” or “Product Categories” column.
After executing, you will see that the brands or categories are no longer showing anymore on the product names.
c) Bulk rename Woocommerce products by eliminating specific characters
Eliminating unnecessary characters, such as special symbols or excessive punctuation, can make product titles easier for customers to read and understand, resulting in a better user experience.
For this example, let’s remove the exclamation mark from the name of our products.
You will start by opening the Bulk Edit tool.
Now fill in the fields in the Bulk Edit tool with the following values to bulk rename WooCommerce products by replacing specific words or symbols:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (Even non-visible rows).
- What field do you want to update: Title
- Select type of edit: Replace
- Replace this: We will enter the exclamation mark
- With this: Leave this field empty
- Click on Execute now.
Finally, you will see that the exclamation marks are gone from your product names.
5. Capitalize the words in the product title
For this, go to our tutorial on How to Capitalize the Words in the Product Title.
6. Bulk rename WooCommerce products by importing from a CSV file
You may be working with external data sources or technologies, such as inventory management software or supplier databases, that give updated product names in CSV format in some circumstances.
Importing these names directly into your WooCommerce store can help to streamline your workflow and keep your store up to date with the most recent product information.
In this case, let’s import this spreadsheet:
Once you have downloaded or saved the CSV file, you can open the Import tool.
The first step to take into the Import tool is to select the file to be imported. For this example, we are importing a file from our computer.
Then you will be asked what columns from your document you want to import.
We are just importing the “Name” and “ID” columns, but you can import all of them if you have more information to edit.
Then you will have different options to import your products, but for this scenario, we just want to update existing items and ignore new items.
You can map the products by the “record ID”.
And finally, review the preview and start the import.
After all the items have been processed from the file, you will see the new product names.
By updating product titles, you can now strike a balance between providing relevant information and keeping the title concise and easy to read.
Store owners can use WP Sheet Editor to bulk rename their WooCommerce products and improve the overall shopping experience of their online store.
