WooCommerce – How to Convert Variations into Main Products

If you manage a growing WooCommerce store, you may realize that certain product variations sell significantly better than others. When a specific size, color, or style becomes a top performer, it is often better to convert that variation into a standalone simple product to make it easier for customers to find and purchase directly from your shop page.

However, WooCommerce does not offer a native way to bulk convert variations into simple products. Doing this manually requires opening each variable product, copying the variation data, creating a new simple product, and deleting the old variation. A repetitive process that takes hours to complete.

In this guide, you will learn how to convert WooCommerce product variations into simple products, both individually and in bulk, using a spreadsheet interface.

How Do I Convert WooCommerce Variations to Simple Products in Bulk?

To bulk convert variations into simple products without writing custom PHP code, use the WP Sheet Editor plugin. Open the products spreadsheet, launch the Bulk Edit tool, filter your target variations, and change their Post type to product. Once executed, WooCommerce will automatically assign them as standalone simple products while retaining their pricing and inventory data.

Why Convert Variations into Main Products?

  • Better SEO Visibility: Simple products have dedicated URLs, titles, and meta descriptions, allowing them to rank better for specific long-tail search queries.
  • Faster Checkout Experience: Customers can add the product directly to their cart from the main shop page without needing to select options from dropdown menus first.
  • Improved Product Feeds: Many third-party marketing channels (like Google Merchant Center and Facebook Catalog) process simple products more efficiently than complex variable structures.

Prerequisites: Install WP Sheet Editor

To follow along with this workflow, you need the WP Sheet Editor – WooCommerce Products plugin. This tool replaces the standard WooCommerce product editor with a fast, database-driven spreadsheet interface, allowing you to apply changes to hundreds of products at once.

Once the plugin is installed and activated, navigate to WP Sheet Editor > Edit products in your WordPress dashboard to open the main spreadsheet.

Method 1: How to Convert Individual Variations into Simple Products

If you only need to extract a few specific variations and promote them to main products, you can do this directly from the spreadsheet grid.

Step 1: Display the Variations in the Spreadsheet

By default, the spreadsheet displays parent products. To view your variations, click the Display variations button located on the plugin’s top toolbar. This action will load all product variations into the grid.

Step 2: Change the Product Type

Scroll horizontally through the spreadsheet to locate the Product type column. For the specific variation you want to convert, click on the cell and select the product option from the dropdown. Repeat this for any other variations you wish to update.

After updating the rows, click Save on the toolbar. When the spreadsheet reloads, the system will automatically reclassify the item’s Type from variable to simple.

Step 3: Update or Remove the SKU

Important Implementation Note: When a variation is converted into a standalone product, it retains its original data. If the parent product and the new simple product share the same SKU, it will cause a duplication error in WooCommerce.

To prevent this, locate the SKU column in the spreadsheet and either update the SKU to a new unique identifier or delete it entirely.

Remember to click the Save button again after making your SKU adjustments.

Method 2: How to Bulk Convert Hundreds of WooCommerce Variations

If you need to restructure an entire catalog or detach hundreds of variations from their parent products simultaneously, using the Bulk Edit tool is the most efficient workflow.

Step 1: Open the Bulk Edit Tool

Launch the bulk operation by clicking the Bulk Edit icon on the plugin’s toolbar.

Step 2: Filter Your Target Variations

Instead of editing the entire store database, you must specify exactly which variations to convert.

  1. In the Bulk Edit window, locate the Select the rows that you want to update dropdown.
  2. Choose the I want to select rows to update option. This will open the advanced search tool.

Inside the search parameters, tick the Search on variations checkbox. This ensures the bulk edit tool targets variations rather than parent products.

Optional Targeting: To narrow your selection further, utilize the additional search fields:

  • Contains keyword: Find all variations containing a specific word in the title (e.g., “Large” or “Blue”).
  • Enter taxonomies: Filter variations belonging to specific categories, attributes, or tags.

Once your parameters are set, click the Run search button.

Step 3: Execute the Bulk Conversion

After the search tool filters your targeted variations, you will be returned to the main Bulk Edit window. Configure the settings exactly as follows to apply the structural change:

  • Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (even non-visible rows)
  • What field do you want to edit: Post type
  • Select type of edit: Set value
  • Replace existing value with this value: product
  • Select Edit only variations
  • Finally, click the Execute now button to process the database changes.

Once the process completes, the plugin will convert the selected variations into standalone products, automatically updating their status to simple in the WooCommerce database.

Frequently Asked Questions About Converting Variations

What happens to the parent variable product?

The parent variable product remains intact in your database. However, the variations you converted will no longer be attached to it as selectable options. If you convert all variations of a parent product, the parent product will be empty and should either be deleted or converted into a simple product itself.

Will I lose my variation pricing and stock data?

No. When WP Sheet Editor changes the post type, all existing metadata (including price, sale price, stock quantity, weight, and dimensions) is preserved and seamlessly carried over to the new simple product.

Do I need to assign new categories to the converted products?

Yes. In WooCommerce, variations do not natively hold category data (they inherit it from the parent product). Once converted to standalone simple products, you will need to assign them to their respective WooCommerce categories. You can easily do this in bulk using the WP Sheet Editor spreadsheet.

Simplify Your WooCommerce Catalog Management

Converting product variations into single products used to require tedious manual data entry or complex custom code. Using the WP Sheet Editor – WooCommerce Products plugin, you can manage this transition safely, accurately, and at scale.
