Activate or deactivate the “used for variations” option for all WooCommerce product attributes.
Your customer asks you to make a massive change to the thousands of products in his store. He wants you to deactivate the “Used for variations” option on all products. You have decided that you are no longer going to sell variable products, and the first thing you want is for you to make that change urgently.
Of course, we know it will take you a long time because you have to edit thousands of products one by one. Just imagine the process:
- Open the product
- Go to the attributes section
- Deactivate the option for an attribute
- Deactivate the option for each of the other attributes…
- Save the changes
- Close the product
- Open another product
- Repeat the process as many times as necessary, even thousands of times.
You think that’s funny? We’re sure you don’t. It’s a tedious, boring, time-consuming process.
But we have great news. We want to show you how you can disable the “Used for variations” option for all your product attributes at once. To do this, you’ll use an intuitive and powerful spreadsheet.
We’re talking about the WooCommerce Products Spreadsheet plugin. It displays all your products on a spreadsheet for you to edit any of the fields and values right there just as you would do with Excel or Google Sheets.
Something really great is that you can do advanced searches or edit thousands of products using the plugin’s Search and Bulk Edit tools.
You can download the plugin here: Download WooCommerce Products Spreadsheet Plugin - or - Check the features
Once installed and activated, open the products spreadsheet by going to Sheet Editor > Edit Products.
Now just follow these simple steps to deactivate the “Used for variations” option for all your product attributes.
1- Open the “Bulk Edit” tool
This tool allows you to apply massive changes to hundreds of products in just some seconds. You can edit all your product titles, status, short descriptions, excerpts, dates, etc. You can apply any change you want to thousands of products at once.
Open the tool by clicking on Bulk Edit on the plugin’s toolbar.
2- Deactivate the “Used for variations” option for all your products
After opening the Bulk Edit tool, you need to select these values to deactivate the Used for variations option for your product attributes.
You’ll have these two options.
Option 1: Deactivate “Used for variations” in all attributes
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (even non-visible rows)
- What field do you want to edit: Product attributes
- Select type of edit: Change attribute settings
- What settings do you want to change: Used for variations
- New value: No
- What attribute do you want to edit: All
- Click on Execute now to apply the changes.
Option 2: Activate “Used for variations” in specific attributes
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (even non-visible rows)
- What field do you want to edit: Product attributes
- Select type of edit: Change attribute settings
- What settings do you want to change: Used for variations
- New value: No
- What attribute do you want to edit: In this field, you can deactivate the product colors by choosing pa_color, the product sizes by pa_size, and so on. You decide which attributes you’ll deactivate.
- Click on Execute now to apply the changes.
That was it!
Simple as that, you don’t need to spend many hours or use any PHP snippets. Just take these two simple steps, and you will deactivate or activate the “Used for variations” option for all your WooCommerce product attributes or just for specific ones.
