Sometimes, the taxonomies in our products are so important because our customers search our products in Google using categories, tags, or attributes. Therefore, it could be really useful to identify our product images using the taxonomies on the alt text so that when users search for these keywords, they find the images on Google and are redirected to our store.
The problem is that if you try to do that manually, you’ll certainly need days. Imagine the tedious process:
- Open an image
- Open the associated product
- See the product categories, attributes, tags
- Write the categories, attributes, and tags on the alt text field
- Save changes
- Close the product tab
- Go to the next image
- Open the associated product
- See the product categories, attributes, tags
- Write the categories, attributes, and tags on the alt text field
- Save changes
These eleven steps are just for two images. Now imagine you have 2k images. That will be tedious, boring, and time-consuming.
Fortunately, we have a great solution. You can copy your product taxonomies to your images alt text in seconds using a spreadsheet with a powerful bulk edit tool. Yes, you can do it in seconds.
We’re talking about the Media Library Spreadsheet plugin, which displays all your media files on a spreadsheet where you can do advanced searches and apply changes massively in just some minutes and with just three simple steps.
You can download the plugin here: Download Media Library Spreadsheet Plugin - or - Check the features
Once you install the plugin, please go to Sheet Editor > Edit Media to open the spreadsheet.
Now just follow these steps:
1- Open the Bulk Edit tool
The Bulk Edit tool allows you to apply massive changes to thousands of products. Something great about this tool is that it doesn’t overload your server because it applies the changes in batches to give it some seconds to rest.’
You need to open it by clicking on Bulk Edit on the plugin’s toolbar.
2- Filter all your images
Since the spreadsheet will show all types of files (such as videos, images, zip, audios, etc.), you need to find the images only in order to edit them. For this, you need to select the I want to search rows to update option in the Select the rows that you want to update dropdown.
Now, you need to set these values to filter your files by format:
- Field key: Format
- Operator: CONTAINS
- Value: image
Now just click on Run search to filter all your images.
3- Copy the product categories, tags, and attributes to your images alt text
Once you filter your images, you need to select these values to copy the product categories, tags, and attributes to their alt texts.
- Select the rows that you want to update: I want to search rows to update
- What field do you want to edit: Alt text
- Select type of edit: Copy from other columns
- Copy from this column: $parent_taxonomies$ (Taxonomies of parent post)
- Click on Execute now.
Done!
That’s it. You just need to wait until the plugin finishes applying all the changes and you’ll be done. What could take you entire days, will take you just some minutes, and that’s great.
Remember that you can apply this and lots of other changes.
