In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to bulk edit the last modified date in WordPress posts.

Sometimes, websites have lots of contents. For example, your website may have 500 blog entries you’ve written in the last 5 years.

That’s great; you’ve done a great job.

However, if your readers find an article written 3 or 5 years ago, they may think it’s outdated and doesn’t have anything to offer them.

That’s why it’s important to change the last modified date in your posts.

In fact, some say that last modified date is even more important because it helps your readers see how you take care about your contents.

The problem comes when you have to edit 500 or even 2,000 blog entries. It’s simply hard and takes dozens of hours.

Option 1: Edit posts last modified date individually in the spreadsheet

It’s really simple. Just go to the Modified Date and start editing hundreds of posts modified date individually.

Option 2: Edit posts last modified date using the Bulk Edit tool

If you don’t want to do it individually, you can easily change hundreds of posts’ last modified dates.

Just open the Bulk Edit tool and follow these simple steps.

a) Select the posts where you will change the last modified date

After opening the Bulk Edit tool, select the I want to select rows to update option in the Select the rows that you want to update dropdown.

This will open the fields you need to filter your posts.

You’ll find these options:

  • Contains keyword: Enter any keyword to filter all the posts containing it.
  • Author: Any author’s name
  • Categories, Tags, Formats: Use this same field to filter products by category, tag or format.

Also, you can filter your posts by last modified date.

For example, if you want to edit all the posts modified in 2022, then you need to look for a date in that year and all the posts modified on that date will be filtered.

For this, use the Enable advanced filters checkbox and enter these values:

  • Field key: Modified Date
  • Operator: =
  • Value: enter any date you wish

After you’ve decided which search method to use, click on Run search and all your posts will be filtered.

b) Change last modified date in the filtered posts

In the Bulk Edit fields, use these values to modify all your posts last modified dates:

  • What field do you want to edit: Modified Date
  • Select type of edit: Set value
  • Replace existing value with this value: enter the date you want
  • Click on Execute now

c) Randomize last modified date in the filtered posts

In the Bulk Edit fields, use these values to randomize all your posts last modified dates:

  • What field do you want to edit: Modified Date
  • Select type of edit: Set random value
  • Replace existing value with this value: Enter the dates you want separated with | if you want to select from a predefined list, or enter 2 dates separated with > if you want to select any date from that range.
  • Click on Execute now

Option 3: Import new last modified dates from Excel or Google Sheets

With WP Sheet Editor, you can import new last modified dates from Excel or Google Sheets.

It’s important because you don’t have to edit them all or copy/paste.

Another advantage is that you can edit them offline and then upload them to Sheet Editor.

Follow these simple steps:

a) Click on Import on the top toolbar

c) Click on Import all the columns

d) Select Update existing items, ignore new items in the Do you want to update or create items.

Then, select Title in CSV Field and also in WordPress Field. After that, click on Next

e) Finally, click on The preview is fine, start import
