If you manage a large WooCommerce store, you might eventually run into a scenario where you need to update attribute settings for thousands of variable products at once. A common technical issue happens during product imports or migrations: you successfully import attributes like size and color, but the “Used for variations” checkbox remains disabled.
As a result, your variable products don’t work correctly on the front end, and customers cannot select the options they need.
Fixing this manually is an exhausting process. You would have to open each product, navigate to the Attributes tab, expand every single attribute, check the “Used for variations” box, save the attributes, and then update the product. Doing this for 5,000 products could easily take an entire week of manual data entry.
Fortunately, there is a much more efficient way to manage this. In this tutorial, we will show you how to bulk enable the “Used for variations” option for all your WooCommerce product attributes at once using a spreadsheet interface.
We will use the WP Sheet Editor – WooCommerce Products Spreadsheet plugin to apply this change to your entire catalog without any custom code.

How do I bulk activate the “Used for variations” option in WooCommerce?
Once you have installed and activated WP Sheet Editor, the first step is to open your store data in the spreadsheet view.
Navigate to WP Sheet Editor > Edit Products in your WordPress dashboard.
You will see all your WooCommerce products displayed in a grid format, allowing you to manage large amounts of data efficiently.
1. Open the Bulk Edit Tool
Instead of editing columns manually row by row, we will use the Bulk Edit tool to apply the attribute change across your entire catalog.
Click on the Bulk Edit tool located on the top toolbar of the plugin.
2. Configure the Bulk Edit Settings for Attributes
Once the Bulk Edit tool is open, you need to configure the specific settings to target the “Used for variations” checkbox.
WP Sheet Editor gives you the flexibility to apply this setting to all attributes across your store, or restrict the change to specific attributes (like targeting only the “Color” attribute while leaving “Material” alone). Choose the option below that fits your workflow.
Option 1: Activate “Used for variations” for ALL attributes
If you want every single attribute attached to your products to be available for variations, configure the tool exactly like this:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (even non-visible rows)
- What field do you want to edit: Product attributes
- Select type of edit: Change attribute settings
- What settings do you want to change: Used for variations
- New value: Yes
- What attribute do you want to edit: All
Once configured, click on Execute now.
Option 2: Activate “Used for variations” for SPECIFIC attributes only
If your store uses a mix of attributes—where some are meant for variations (like Size) and others are purely informational (like Brand or Care Instructions)—you should target the specific attribute by name.
Configure the tool as follows:
- Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (even non-visible rows)
- What field do you want to edit: Product attributes
- Select type of edit: Change attribute settings
- What settings do you want to change: Used for variations
- New value: Yes
- What attribute do you want to edit: Select the specific attribute from the dropdown (e.g., choose Color or Size).
Click on Execute now to apply the changes to the selected attribute.
Implementation Note
By executing this process, you have successfully checked the “Used for variations” box on the backend for all targeted products.
Troubleshooting tip: Keep in mind that enabling this setting prepares the attribute to be used, but it does not automatically generate the variations themselves. If you imported simple products and need to convert them to variable products, you will still need to generate the actual variation combinations, which can also be handled efficiently within the spreadsheet interface.
Managing WooCommerce attributes does not require tedious manual clicking. By using this bulk edit workflow, you can correct import errors, standardize your catalog, and keep your variable products functioning properly without wasting hours of your day.
