WP Sheet Editor – Taxonomy Terms is a bulk editor for WordPress taxonomies that allows you to manage taxonomies using a spreadsheet. It works with all WordPress taxonomies, so you can manage categories, tags, and attributes, and custom taxonomies in bulk.

Important. In this tutorial, we’re merging complete taxonomies (global attributes), not taxonomy terms. To merge taxonomy terms like colors, sizes, etc., you can read this tutorial.

Merging WooCommerce global attributes is useful when you make imports with different attribute names and end up with duplicate attributes. This generates confusion, and your products may not be connected to the right attributes.

Fortunately, WP Sheet Editor allows you to merge or combine entire WooCommerce taxonomies, and the plugin will automatically migrate all the products, variations, and attribute terms, to the attribute that remains.

After installing and activating the plugin, you need to follow these steps:

1- Open the WooCommerce Global Attributes spreadsheet

In wp-admin, go to Products > Attributes, and click on Edit in a spreadsheet.

2- Merge WooCommerce global attributes using WP Sheet Editor

As you can see in our spreadsheet, we have three duplicate global attributes:

  • Label
  • Color
  • Size

We have some options to combine our global attributes and remove the duplicates.

a) Merge ALL duplicate global attributes

Merging all duplicate attributes means that WP Sheet Editor will find all global attributes that have the same name and combine them automatically. This is useful to save time if you have a lot of duplicate attributes.

You just need to open the Merge attributes tool.

Once you’re in the Merge attributes tool, select these values:

  • Replace these attributes: Merge all the duplicates with same name
  • Tick this checkbox: “I understand it will remove all the attributes with duplicate name and their terms inside, it will keep one attribute per name only, and the products and variations will be updated to use the final attribute, and I also made a backup because the changes are not reversible without a backup.
  • Click on Execute”.

A great thing is that after merging the duplicate global attributes, you won’t have to edit the products manually because they will be updated automatically.

b) Merge all the attributes from a search (by keyword)

If you do not want to merge all duplicate global attributes, you can use the search tool to find the specific attributes you want to combine.

For this, open the Merge attributes tool.

In the Replace these attributes drop-down, select the “Select all the items from a search” option. This will open the advanced search tool.

In this example, we will search for all the global attributes whose attribute label contains the Color keyword.

Important. If you follow this method, WP Sheet Editor will find all the attributes containing the selected keyword. The attribute label could or could not be exactly the same. For example, you may want to combine “Color Attribute” and “Product Color” into the “Color” attribute.

For this, enter the desired keyword in Contains keyword and click on Run search.

  • Replace these attributes: Select all the items from a search

  • Tick the checkbox: “I understand it will remove all the attributes from my search and keep the attribute selected above, and the products and variations will be updated too.”
  • Click on Execute.
