If you have imported Shopify or BigCommerce products to WooCommerce recently, you may have duplicate product attributes. But that can also happen when you manually create attributes without realizing they already existed. The point is that you end up with several duplicate attributes that have been assigned to certain products, and you may even have duplicate and empty attributes.
If you simply remove all the duplicate attributes manually, you will make the mistake of leaving all the products without that attribute.
As you can see, we have five colors called BLUE. Each of these BLUE colors has between four and three products assigned to it.
Therefore, if we remove four of those BLUE colors, we will leave all the WooCommerce products without that color, and our customers will not find those products when they search by color.
We’ll show you how to automatically delete the duplicate WooCommerce attributes and assign all the posts to the remaining attribute. We’ll use the Taxonomy Terms Spreadsheet plugin, which creates a spreadsheet for each taxonomy you have on WordPress.
- A spreadsheet for categories
- A spreadsheet for tags
- A spreadsheet for colors
- A spreadsheet for tags
- Etc.
In each of the taxonomy spreadsheets, you can do advanced searches and apply bulk changes in seconds.

Before executing the “Remove Duplicates” feature:
To avoid showing 404 errors to your users after removing duplicates, you need to create 301 redirections to the remaining taxonomies. But we can create them automatically for you. Just do this:
- Install the Redirection plugin to create the redirection links.
- Install the WP Sheet Editor – Redirection extension.
Once both the plugin and the extension are installed on your website, you can run the “Remove Duplicates” feature freely because our plugin will automatically create the 301 redirections to the remaining taxonomies.
A backup is recommended to avoid any problems.
Once installed and activated, follow these steps to remove duplicate attributes in WooCommerce.
1- Open the spreadsheet you need to use
The plugin creates a spreadsheet for each taxonomy, so you need to go to WP Sheet Editor > Edit categories, tags, attributes, taxonomies.
You just need to click on the spreadsheet you want to open. For example, if you want to open the product colors spreadsheet, just click on Edit Product Color. You’ll see the spreadsheets available.
Once you open the spreadsheet, you’ll see all the colors displayed as rows and the fields displayed as columns. It will display the duplicate colors, and the Count column displays the number of WooCommerce products associated with that attribute.
2- Open the “Merge Terms” tool
The plugin contains a Merge Terms tool that allows you to combine several taxonomy terms in one.
You need to open with one click on the toolbar.
3- Remove all the duplicate attributes
The Merge Terms tool contains the option called Merge all the duplicates with same name and hierarchy.
With this option, you can remove all the duplicate attributes and assign all the products to the remaining attribute.
Just select that option and click on Execute.
Once you execute the Merge all the duplicates with same name and hierarchy option, you’ll see that the spreadsheet will show the remaining attribute only and assign all the products to it.
How easy!
Deleting duplicate attributes and assigning all the products to the remaining attribute is really simple with the Taxonomy Terms Spreadsheet plugin.
You just need to take three simple steps and the plugin will delete them automatically.
