WordPress – Regenerate Category URLs from Titles

Sometimes, when you create new categories, WP assigns them different URL slugs. For example, if you created them and didn’t assign a specific name at the moment of creating them, WP will assign a number to their URLs.

That’s why in this article we’ll help you generate URLs from your category titles. This is really useful if you have hundreds of categories without their titles in the URLs.

We’re going to do it using the WP Sheet Editor plugin. It displays all your taxonomies in a spreadsheet so you can edit freely. Also, it contains a powerful Bulk Edit tool that allows you to apply changes to hundreds of categories.

Once installed and activated, go to Sheet Editor > Edit categories and the plugin will display your categories in a spreadsheet.

1- Generate category URLs from titles in the spreadsheet

It’s really simple. Just go to the Slug column. There, you’ll see that some URLs have numbers or any other content.

What you need to do is to select the content of the Slug column and hit Delete in your keyboard. After that, click on Save to apply the changes.

Then you’ll see that the slugs have been changed. It’s that simple!

2- Generate category URLs from titles in all categories

For this, just open the Bulk Edit tool. It’s located on the plugin’s toolbar, so just click on it.

Once there, you need to select these values in the Bulk Edit fields:

  • Select the rows that you want to update: Edit all the rows from my current search (even non-visible rows).
  • What field do you want to edit: Slug
  • Select type of edit: Clear value
  • Tick the Use slower execution method
  • Click on Execute now

Done!

As you can see, it’s really simple to generate thousands of category URLs from their titles using the WP Sheet Editor plugin.
